Something for my portfolio again. I went to the other end of Germany last week - 9 hours by train - to convince some agency that I am worthy of being their intern. They gave me 1.5 weeks to deliver them 2 - 3 more pieces of work that are not purely illustrative. The funny thing is that I have been ill for most of that time. Ha! Life can really be full of... adventures. So I did this, which is kinda an illustration but I think it could also be an ad in a magazine or so. Sometimes I get really tired of the attitude that EVERYTHING has to be done digital these days. And if it's digital please make it fucking vector... because everything else is so outdated! Nothing against vector, some people can create absolutely beautiful art with Illustrator and co. but most of the vector stuff I see in the advertising and everyday life pretty much sucks. Does it have soul? Does advertising need a soul at all? I dunno. I'm fed up with this modern snobbery. I'm also kind of fed up with being a graphic designer... but shhhh, don't tell. I'm sorry, I'm not very good with Illustrator. But I AM an Illustrator. Isn't that funny? Well, not really. Anyway, this is done with traditional mediums and slightly edited with Photoshop. It's supposed to have that sketchy character. grungy paper texture from ~bashcorpo I'm tired. copic multi liner, coloured pencils and photoshop |

BTW, I concur with you completely - if I wanted vector art, I'd trace pretty pictures from the newspaper(!), at least that would be more artistic than most vector drawings... What about a digital painting? Painter 8 (Corel?) etc has some luscious shiny fake paints and gooey effects that work nicely with a tablet. Gretchen as Mona Lisa?
An electronic oil painting doesn't count as illustration, does it?

On rare occasion when I'm drawing with a pencel, I find myself wanting to hit "control+z" to undo my mistake. It's unnerving to find how unconsciously conditioned I am to digital shortcuts.
One small nitpick...the word "abort" looks more like "abord".

Yeah, I thought about trying painter. I got a free painting software (artweaver) but I guess I need to practise a lot more... my first try ended rather ugly.
